Lets begin today…
Every Catholic should pray for the following things everyday:
- For the Holy Father: His safety, guidance and well being
- For Priests: For their holiness and for more of them.
- For the Unity of all Christians
- For an end to abortion
- For an end to hunger
- For the conversion of Sinners
- For the Holy Souls in purgatory
- For the conversion of all peoples
- For the coming of the Kingdom
Next we need to ask God what intentions he would have us take up. This can be so hard because many times we become extremely emotional about the things that we feel are pressing in our life. I would call you on to really ask God which of these things He would have us concentrate on.
Try to start with a list of 10 intentions that you are going to battle in prayer for. Now another question is, “What exactly do I pray for?” In some cases the answer is easy. If you have a relative who doesn’t know Jesus then obviously you are praying for conversion. But sometimes its not so easy. If you are concerned about a certain relationship or something like that you first want to ask God, “How should I pray?” If it doesn’t become clear then your prayer is, “Thy will be done, Lord” “Come Holy Spirit fill this situation.”
Once you have your first list of ten intentions and you have discerned what exactly to pray for them, now it is time to decide what you will do to intercede. You will obviously cry out to God for them in your prayer times but it can help to do specific things for each intention. Again, like all decisions, lets invite God into this one. Rosaries, novena’s, mass novena’s, fasting and litanies can help greatly. For example: if you have a brother who you want to come back to the Catholic Faith try praying a novena.
Many times we can’t narrow our intentions down to a list of 10. Other intentions will invade our hearts and minds because they are near to our heart. In this case I would recommend that you mention these during mass or rosary. After all they are on our heart for a reason. This will help us to concentrate on those intentions that we have discerned.
We continue praying for the intentions until the prayers have been answered or until we have discerned that it is time to pray for something else.
As intercessory warriors we must be fighting sin in our own life and constantly growing in humility. The more pure we become the easier it will be to discern and pray. (keeping our intercessory prayers a secret can help to grow in humility) Remember the scripture: “The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects.” James 5:16
Start your list today and see how God uses you. Prayer should be first, before action.
Here is a great prayer you can add to your daily intercessory prayer. It is from the Raccolta and it can also be found in, “The Lion Roars…” Prayerbook
Petitions from the Raccolta
Loosen O, Lord, We pray Thee, the bonds of our sins, and by the intercession of the blessed Mary ever virgin, Mother of God, St. Joseph, the blessed apostles Peter and Paul, and all saints, keep us Thy servants and our abodes in all holiness; cleanse us, our kinsfolk, and acquaintances from all vices; adorn us with all virtues; grant us peace and health; repel our enemies visible and invisible; curb our carnal desires; give us healthful seasons; bestow Thy charity upon our friends and our enemies; guard Thy holy city; preserve our Sovereign Pontiff N. ; defend all prelates, princes and Christian peoples from all adversity. Let Thy blessing be ever upon us, and grant to all the faithful departed eternal rest Through Christ our Lord. Amen
