It took writing this blog for me to realize just how shallow my interior life is. The more I reflect on my relationship with God the more I realize how terribly lacking I am. I was thinking about this yesterday and suddenly it occurred to me, “Isn’t that the point?”
Every book on the spiritual life will tell you that pride is the biggest hindrance to going deeper. It is after all “the root of all evil.” Fulton Sheen used to say often that someone who says they are the worst sinner in the world is wrong because the worst sinner in the world would never admit that. Knowledge of your lack of love can be a powerful thing because it shows us our need. My knowledge of God is so small and insufficient. That being said, I do know one thing. God is eternal. He is endless. He is, for lack of a greater term, an ocean of mercy. This is why no matter how far we press on, no matter how much we surrender, there is so much more to do and to explore and to give. This is the humility that should reside in every Christian heart. The humility that constantly whispers in your ear, “keep going, go deeper, work harder, you can give more, you can surrender more, give all.” I know this relationship will never end or even slow down. It will be our eternal romance and that is why we can only be satisfied by God because we need an ETERNAL romance to be satisfied. Careful though, don’t get caught on the word “satisfied”. You will never be “satisfied” in the traditional sense of the word. You will always want more of God. The good news is that He is endless.
Let us pray: Oh God draw me in. Draw me in to that endless romance. Satisfy my heart. Flood me. Make me surrender to You oh Lord. Amen
“To Fall in love with God is the greatest of all romances; to seek Him, the greatest adventure; to find Him, the greatest human achievement.”
“Our hearts are restless O Lord. Until they rest in you.”
