I will send My angel, who shall go before thee, and keep thee in thy journey: and bring thee into the place that I have prepared Exodus 23:20
It has been a part of the tradition of the Church reaching all the way back to the Fathers that each of us has been given a “Guardian” Angel to watch over us. Your Guardian angel will play a huge role in your spiritual life. As Radical Catholics it is essential that we cultivate a strong devotion to our Guardian Angels and recognize the role that they play in our life.
Our Guardian Angel fights for us in temptation. If you are striving to rid sin from your life and you have made a plan to do so, make sure to include your Guardian Angel in that plan. Our Guardian Angel can help to remind us to withstand the temptations that many times sneak up on us.
Our Guardian Angel is always there. Many times the Radical Catholic life can be a lonely one. We need to remember that even at the times when we feel most alone that God has given us a constant reminder that heaven is with us. You are never alone.
Guardian Angels can be great allies in our efforts to proclaim the Kingdom of Christ. When I speak I always address the Guardian Angels of the people present. I ask them to assist in opening the peoples hearts and minds and to remind them of the message once we part ways.
Our Guardian Angel can help us in striving for the prayer we all need. When I enter the point in my prayer times for silent prayer I ask my Guardian Angel to aid in contributing to the silence and keep the time free from distraction.
Start to cultivate a relationship with your Guardian Angel today. Here are 3 of the traditional ways we can do this:
Veneration: We should venerate our Angel because it is a being that ever beholds the Face of God and is therefore so Holy.
Having Confidence: Your Guardian Angel has protected and assisted you countless times and will continue to do so. You should have confidence that your Guardian Angel will assist in time of need.
Love your Guardian Angel: Reflect often that He has never left us and always been at our side. Our Guardian Angel knows us more intimately than any human friends we have and he never ever leaves us.
Our human weakness is protected by the assistance of the Angels and…in all our perils, provided faith remain with us, we are defended by the aid of spiritual powers. St. Gregory of Nyssa
For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways. Psalm 91:11
Holy angels, our guardians, defend us in battle that we may not perish in the dreadful judgment. Prayer from Vespers.
